I've listened to this only twice today and am desperately trying to figure out how to describe this wild masterpiece.
It sounds like a gloriously experimental hybrid between Loud City Song and Tragedy and really pushes the abstract/experimental structure of the former in a way I never thought she'd return to. I don't immediately see a clear standout track (in the way that Lucette was) but this album is truly boundless in scope and imagination and its hard to imagine anything even approaching this in creativity or uniqueness anytime soon. I really haven't heard anything like this and there's no one else who could pull it off as well as Julia does.aka if you haven't heard this yet strap in for a RIDE bc this one is gonna throw everyone for a doozy.

Julia Holter Interview
I really expect mixed reviews on this bc it is very dense and experimental and I can't imagine many critics giving it a fair shot before giving up w a 7/10also - I really loved listening to her playful vocals on this. She hasn't done much vocal playing in the past and it's used super well throughout this album (it really blew me away when listening from the beginning and getting to 'Whether'). From the first second of Turn the Light On I knew I was in for a ride, I had heard the song back in March when she came to Mexico City to do a piano set and here this song is completely different and even more majestic. I know it sounds like I'm exaggerating but I can't express with words how much this album has impacted me even if it's only been out for a couple hours. It's raw, emotional, sweet and tender all at the same time, it really feels like standing in the middle of chaos. Also I love medieval stuff and when she said this was going to be medieval af I SCREAMED and songs like Chaitius represent that in a magnificent way. I remember recording 30 seconds of a song called 'I Can't Turn Away' in that concert and playing it over and over, I was so surprised to hear it's here as Les Jeux to You and now it's definitely song of the year for me.
